Today (5 Feb) 10:15 AM at Ta Kwai Temple, Phanom Dong Rak District, Surin Province, Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, Deputy Minister of Defence, gave an interview regarding public concerns about a third clash on the Thai-Cambodian border. Lt. Gen. Adul stated that with the election on February 8, 2026, in two days, whether or not there will be conflict depends on the government, the military, intelligence units in the area, and sufficient resources to obtain information. However, intelligence reports indicate nothing unusual. Regarding Cambodia's troop preparations and training, he stated that it is normal military practice. "We train, and they train too. We train our personnel and our military equipment. I believe that the factors that could lead to conflict include the intentions of the country's leaders. I believe the Cambodian leaders still intend to fight, but such a conflict requires the capabilities of both troops and equipment. In the previous conflict, I believe Cambodia suffered considerable losses in terms of equipment readiness.
Lt. Gen. Adul added, "However, we have secured all the important areas. Therefore, for Cambodia to launch a large-scale conflict with Thailand, it would require at least two to three times the resources. And even if Cambodia wanted to fight, there would need to be indications, such as the need to reinforce troops and equipment in the area, which is not currently the case. I have confidence in the commanders and troops stationed along the border, who are ready. Our troops have already voted in the advance voting on February 1st, 2026. For the main election on February 8th, 2026, our troops are ready to instill confidence in the public during the election. I ask that you feel confident and safe; I assure you that we will protect and ensure the safety of the people."
Regarding the election period... Cambodia might use this opportunity to attack Thailand. Regarding the possibility, Lieutenant General Adul said it was possible but unlikely. It might involve small clashes between troops, such as patrols encountering each other. He believes a large-scale war like the previous one is unlikely.
Furthermore, regarding the instructions and cooperation requested by the Thai military should confrontations occur during patrols or in the event of provocation, Lieutenant General Adul stated that there is no need to worry; the Suranaree Task Force has established rules for engagement.
Concerning the Thai Army bringing Thai and foreign journalists, including the FBI, into O'Semed, Cambodia, a scammer hotspot, and the subsequent Cambodian statement alleging Thai entry into a Cambodian hotel without permission and calling it a scammer hideout, Lieutenant General Adul said it's Cambodia's issue. Thailand is simply doing its duty; we shouldn't pay attention to Cambodia's actions. Since those locations are used for drone launches to threaten Thailand and are positions for snipers, Thailand must maintain control. We can discuss appropriate measures when a new government is in place.
