Today (4 March) at 3:00 PM, at the Multipurpose Building of the National Defense College, General Ukrit Boontanon, Chief of Defense Forces, gave an interview regarding the preparations for evacuating Thai citizens from the Middle East, as ordered by the Prime Minister. He revealed that preparations had been made since before the National Security Council (NSC) meeting, but the operational guidelines are still being assessed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish a joint course of action.
General Ukrit further stated that using military aircraft for the evacuation of Thai citizens would present different challenges compared to using commercial aircraft. While commercial aircraft offer convenience, military aircraft are more suitable in a different context. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the situation in each area, such as the cases of Israel and Iran, where each country has specific requirements for its approach. The choice of evacuation method will depend on what is most appropriate. He also stated that coordination with the country of origin for the evacuation of Thai citizens will primarily be done through diplomatic channels. The evacuation itself will depend on the number of people to be evacuated and the capabilities of the aircraft used. For example, if a chartered flight is chosen and hired from the country of origin, only one aircraft might be needed. A large commercial aircraft would facilitate obtaining airspace permits. However, if military aircraft are used, additional flights would be required. For an evacuation of 200 people, 3-4 flights would be necessary.
General Ukrit reiterated concerns about the journey from Tehran, Iran, to the Turkish border, which is over 800 kilometers. Regarding security within Thailand, given the large number of Israeli and Iranian residents, he stated that intelligence gathering is underway to address any potential situation. Thailand is prepared and not complacent about the possibility of terrorist attacks. He emphasized that all units have been instructed to be prepared. Concerning the current situation in the Middle East, he believes all countries are concerned, as it is a significant global issue. All nations are monitoring the situation and assessing future developments. In the short, medium, and long term, the current situation is changing. What all countries once believed in has completely shifted, and it will take time to assess the situation and respond accordingly.
“The muddy waters will eventually settle, and things will become clearer. Everyone is currently evaluating and processing the situation,” General Ukrit said.
When asked whether the situation was expected to be prolonged, General Ukrit stated that the Thai military is not the one designing the operation; therefore, it cannot be assessed. However, what he hopes for is a swift end to minimize the impact on Thailand and prevent further escalation. He assured that there is no need to worry excessively, as the situation in Thailand is not yet alarming, but emphasized the importance of not being complacent.
