Today (April 27, 2026) at 10:00 AM at Government House, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, also Minister of Interior, welcomed H.E. Mr. Chan Chun Sing, Coordinating Minister for Public Service and Minister for Education and Minister of Defence of the Republic of Singapore, on his introductory visit to Thailand.

Following the discussions at 11:00 AM in front of the Government House press room, Ms. Rachada Thanadirek, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, briefed the press on the results of the discussions, stating that the atmosphere was very friendly due to the long-standing and strong relationship between Thailand and Singapore, particularly the relationship between the two leaders. Earlier, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong called to congratulate the Thai Prime Minister on his official appointment. Several issues were discussed: firstly, cooperation in military security. Singapore thanked Thailand for its role in the Cobra Gold exercise with Singapore, and this will continue as a shared mission between Thailand and Singapore.

Ms. Rachada further stated that the Prime Minister also proposed cooperation in developing the aviation and maritime industries, given the strategic advantages both countries have. Singapore's technology is advanced and well-regarded, while Thailand has suitable land for aviation and maritime development. The Singaporean Minister of Defence agreed and will further push for details on this issue. Regarding energy security, both countries agreed on the need to collaborate on promoting regional self-sufficiency, whether in fossil fuels or solar power, through a power grid sharing existing energy reserves.

Ms. Rachada added that the Singaporean Minister of Defence placed great importance on and showed significant interest in the Land Bridge project, as it presents economic opportunities for Thailand and foreign investors if it is implemented. The Land Bridge is not just about building ports on both sides of the coast in Thailand but also encompasses industrial development in the southern region. If this becomes clear and can be pushed forward, there would likely be investors from Singapore and other countries joining in the development of this project.

When asked by reporters whether Singapore would assist or invite investors in the Land Bridge project, Ms. Rachada stated that details had not yet been discussed, but they acknowledged the project's attractiveness and saw the opportunity that, if implemented, it would create economic opportunities for Thailand and the region. She explained that current shipping routes primarily use the Strait of Malacca, but the Land Bridge project would provide an additional opportunity to facilitate maritime transport. This is a significant opportunity, and they are interested in Thailand's push for this project. Details are still being monitored by Singapore, as clarity from the government is needed before any investment discussions can take place.

“I reiterate that today, the Singaporean Minister of Defence expressed interest and saw a great opportunity for Thailand if the project is pushed through,” Ms. Rachada stated.

Regarding the opposition's question about the government proceeding without presenting cost-benefit analysis, Ms. Rachada explained that this has been a priority for several years. Every large project requires an economic and environmental impact analysis before being presented to the Cabinet.

“Thank you to the opposition for their concerns, but please be assured that the government will not approve a project without a clear plan. Everything must go through economic and environmental studies, and there are many other details that need to be done. We cannot hide anything and proceed without public knowledge. Don't worry about that; everything must be transparent and explained to the public, showing the benefits and value for the people in the area and the entire country from this investment opportunity. I reiterate that this project is funded by the private sector,” Ms. Rachada stated.

Ms. Rachada emphasized that understanding the project is not limited to the Land Bridge project but applies to all large-scale projects. While there are advantages and economic benefits, we must listen to and communicate with the public regarding their concerns. This isn't a one-time communication, as concerns vary and new issues arise as the project develops. The Prime Minister has stressed that we must understand the public's perspective in everything we do. Communicating clearly so the public understands what we are doing and why is essential. She acknowledged, however, that this project involves attracting foreign investment.

When asked if there would be a presentation of figures before the Cabinet meeting to build confidence among both Thai people and those who don't understand, including the opposition, Ms. Rachada replied, “That must be done continuously. Communicating with the public is not easy. Even after the Cabinet meeting, the process isn't complete. It must be done continuously.” She also requested that the media and the private sector help present the positive aspects that will benefit Thailand and the Thai people. Concerns can also be raised, as no project will please everyone 100% immediately. However, positive things can move forward if we have a good understanding based on accurate information.

Regarding her confidence in the project's success, Ms. Rachada stated that it is a good intention of the government for the benefit of the people, and she hopes that the public will see this economic opportunity.

When asked if it seems that many countries, including China and Singapore, are interested in Thailand and whether there are other countries as well, Ms. Rachada said, “Please don't underestimate Thailand's potential by saying that this person or that person isn't interested. That's not true. We have strong financial and fiscal credibility. In the past two years, Thailand has regained its ranking as a country that investors are interested in investing in. Thailand doesn't lack oil; we have a problem with oil prices, which is a global issue. There are many things that provide stability and attractiveness that other countries don't have. Why then do some groups try to devalue and undermine our credibility? Don't think that you are speaking amongst yourselves to create political issues only within the country. Every word you use to devalue Thailand is heard by foreigners. And when people in political positions speak in a way that suggests Thailand is unreliable, no one benefits. Therefore, please focus your criticism of the government on its appropriateness and concerns. Please criticize constructively, especially on issues where you believe Thailand lacks potential. That's not Thailand,” Ms. Rachada said.
