Today (28 April 2026), 9:50 AM at Government House, Mr. Chatchai Bangchawad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council, gave an interview before the Cabinet meeting regarding the progress in establishing the peace dialogue committee for the southern border provinces. He stated that the official name of the committee head has been submitted, but they are awaiting the Prime Minister's signature to begin the process.

When asked whether the committee head would determine the format and composition, Mr. Chatchai said that the details of the structure and format of the talks must be considered, with the National Security Council continuing to serve as the secretariat.

Regarding the timeframe for starting the talks, Mr. Chatchai stated that they must await the Prime Minister's signature before the process can proceed.

Regarding the continuation of past talks, Mr. Chatchai stated that during the time of General Somsak Rungsita, the previous team in charge had already discussed important issues to a certain extent. Although there have been changes, the original issues may be considered, depending on the new head of the negotiating team.

Concerning the issue of the authenticity/false identities of the negotiating parties, Mr. Chatchai reiterated that the approach is to engage in discussions with all groups, both domestic and international, including those with differing opinions. Both political and security sectors will participate, a principle that has been consistently followed.

When asked about his confidence in whether the new negotiating team would improve the situation in the South, Mr. Chatchai said that past experiences must be evaluated and the approach adjusted accordingly. Regarding differences from the previous approach, he left it to the head of the negotiating team to consider, noting that Mr. Thanat Suwannanon, Director of the National Intelligence Agency, will head the peace negotiating team for the Southern Border Provinces.

Regarding the assassination attempt on the US President, Mr. Chatchai stated that he is not directly responsible for Thailand's role, but believes that the police have measures in place to ensure the safety of VIPs and are following established procedures.

As for the situation on the Thai-Cambodian border... Following the decision to revoke MOU 44, Mr. Chatchai stated that Thailand will continue to operate within the existing bilateral framework and Joint Statement. The revocation was in accordance with the Prime Minister's statement. Regarding Cambodia's stance, media reports indicate they may disagree. Thailand has verified that the revocation is legally permissible, and details are under the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will present the matter to the Cabinet meeting.
