Today (28 October 2026) at 2:00 PM at the Government Press Center, Naree Samosorn Building, Government House, Mr. Ekkaphop Pienprasert, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, addressed the “Residential Solar” initiative. He explained that the program is part of a broader energy transition a shift currently underway globally. Thailand has already taken steps in this transition, such as reducing electricity costs for the public and removing charges for public lighting previously hidden within household electricity bills effective from September 2026, which has led to lower utility costs for citizens.

Furthermore, the government has introduced a “Direct PPA” (Power Purchase Agreement) model, allowing electricity to be sold directly to large-scale consumers, such as those in industrial estates. Additionally, the initiative enables households to install rooftop solar systems, allowing them to generate their own electricity, save on costs, and sell any surplus power back to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) or the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA). This helps reduce household expenses and creates new income streams for the public; it is not a policy designed to favor large corporations. Other improvements, such as revisions to contract renewal terms, further ensure that the public benefits from these measures.

Mr. Ekkaphop added that following the launch of the program and the opening of the registration process, there was a high level of public interest and a significant number of sign-ups. However, the circulation of distorted and inaccurate information has since sparked concern among the public. Excellent projects those capable of helping the nation navigate the energy transition risk being derailed by trivial, baseless accusations leveled against them.
