Today (4 November 2026) at the Joint Coordination Room of the Space Operations Centre, Defence Information and Space Technology Department (DITSD), located on the 13th floor of the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Defence building in Bangkok, Lieutenant General Adul Boonthamcharoen, Minister of Defence, and his delegation conducted an inspection. The visit aimed to assess capabilities in space operations and the use of satellite technology to support security missions, as well as to explore strategies for further developing these capacities to address emerging threats.

During the visit, the Minister of Defence received a briefing on the overall landscape of Thailand’s space operations and the utilisation of satellite systems for communication, remote sensing/imaging, and positioning/navigation. The Minister of Defence noted that while personnel from the Defence Information and Space Technology Department may not serve directly on the battlefield, their technology and space-related capabilities are essential in supporting frontline forces. Regarding information, surveillance, and support for military operations, all personnel are urged to strive for the advancement of knowledge, technology, and operational capabilities. This is essential to keep pace with evolving situations and emerging threats, thereby strengthening national security and ensuring the well-being of the public.

The Ministry of Defence is currently exploring ways to enhance access to high-resolution satellite imagery, expand satellite communication systems to cover all operational areas, and diversify positioning and navigation systems—mitigating the risks associated with relying on a single technology. Furthermore, the Ministry is conducting a feasibility study on the long-term development of its own satellite capabilities.

Simultaneously, the development of space-related security initiatives will focus on fostering integration and cooperation among the armed forces, government agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions. This will be pursued alongside the development of domestic human resources and technology, with the goal of gradually reducing reliance on foreign sources, prioritising necessity, cost-effectiveness, and the overall benefit to national security.

The Ministry of Defence reaffirms its commitment to advancing space technology as a vital capability in support of military missions. This ensures that frontline personnel receive accurate and timely information, enabling them to effectively carry out their duties protecting national sovereignty and safeguarding the public while remaining prepared to address future security challenges.
