Thailand has once again received global recognition after Forbes magazine ranked the country among the best places to retire in 2025 under its feature, “The Best Places to Retire Abroad in 2025.” The ranking highlights Thailand’s affordable cost of living, high-quality healthcare system, and welcoming culture as the main factors that make it stand out on the world stage.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), citing Forbes, more than 712,000 Americans are expected to choose to retire abroad in 2025 instead of remaining in their home country. The key motivations behind this shift include a higher quality of life, easier access to healthcare, lower living costs, and greater political stability.

Forbes based its rankings on several key criteria, including the cost of living, quality of medical care, personal safety, and the local population’s attitude toward foreigners.

Thailand has become a popular destination for American retirees, offering a cost of living less than half that of the United States while maintaining a high quality of life. The country’s healthcare system is internationally recognized for its high standards and affordability, helping position Thailand as a leading hub for medical tourism in the region. Culturally, Thailand is known for its warmth and openness, with friendly locals and widespread English proficiency, which make it easy for foreigners to adapt. The country also enjoys a low crime rate and strong political stability, except for natural disaster risks such as tsunamis.

Obtaining the right to reside in Thailand is relatively straightforward. The O-X retirement visa, designed for foreign retirees, requires proof of an annual income of about USD 24,000 per couple and an additional USD 25,000 in a Thai bank account. Moreover, Thailand has a double taxation treaty with the United States, preventing retirees from being taxed twice and exempting U.S. Social Security and pension income from Thai taxation.

Forbes also recommended four destinations within Thailand that cater to different lifestyles:

1. Bangkok: The vibrant capital city filled with modern amenities and conveniences in every aspect, despite its high population density.

2. Chiang Mai: The northern capital surrounded by stunning nature, offering a peaceful atmosphere and a large expat community.

3. Phuket: Thailand’s largest island in the south, famous for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, and comprehensive facilities.

4. Koh Samui: The second-largest island located in the Gulf of Thailand, known for its tranquility and suitability for long-term stays.

Thailand’s inclusion in the Forbes list reaffirms the country’s readiness to welcome visitors of all types such as tourists, investors, and retirees alike. Forbes also noted that the trend of Americans retiring abroad is on the rise, driven by the pursuit of a better quality of life, lower living expenses, and accessible healthcare. Thailand’s combination of these factors has cemented its reputation as “the world’s second home,” a warm and welcoming destination for retirees from every corner of the globe.
