The scandal surrounding the so-called “VIP cells” at the Bangkok Remand Prison continues to escalate after Achariya Ruengrattanapong, president of the Crime Victims Assistance Club, revealed extensive allegations involving the prison warden, who is accused of receiving massive monthly payments in exchange for providing special privileges to inmates, particularly Chinese nationals linked to illicit activities.
According to the information, the warden allegedly received 8–10 million baht per month from various fees and special services. VIP visitations reportedly required a monthly payment of 40,000–50,000 baht, allowing inmates to meet visitors in the lawyers’ meeting room with no time limits or restrictions on the number of people. Achariya also claimed that Chinese models were brought into the prison on Sundays, with each individual costing around 2 million baht, and potentially 4 million baht when two were brought in at once.
Staff who facilitated these services were allegedly paid hundreds of thousands of baht every Sunday, while inmates made additional monthly payments to have the warden approve personal requests and conveniences without limitation.
Achariya further suggested that the warden likely did not operate alone, pointing to the involvement of senior figures within the Department of Corrections, describing the warden’s postings as consistently aligned with “high-value locations.” He also criticized the long-standing transfer system, which he said was driven by informal payments, and noted that officers known for integrity were often removed and replaced with allies of the warden, reducing oversight and enabling corruption.
