On January 27,2026 (local time), Foreign media reported that the U.S. government might risk another shutdown, after the longest shutdown in history in the last year-end. The critical cause of this time came from the tension in the Congress about operational overreach and the infringement of the rights, freedoms, and safety of American citizens by ICE, the agency tasked with border security and combating transnational crime.

In recent times, ICE or U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement especially in Minneapolis, Minnesota has already killed 2 innocent American citizens. The first victim was a 37-year-old woman, who was shot at the early of this January, which has been claimed that she attacked the officers while the video shows that they only had a conversation before ICE shot her to the death in her car. Then, on Jan 24, the same incident had happened with the 37-year-old man with the claim that he has a gun and intends to attack the officers. While the video has shown that he only held the phone in his hand and tried to assist other people who were abused by the ICE.
These outrageous acts from them had led to extreme tension in the U.S’s society both political branches and American citizens.
After the incident on Jan 24, Tim Waltz, Minnesota’s governor, voiced to President Donald Trump that he had to remove the ICE operation out of the city since it put two innocent citizens to death.
With the severe backlash, Trump showed his intention to deescalate the tensions by removing some of the federal agents out of Minnesota and moving Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol Chief overseeing enforcement operations in Minnesota to his previous position, with Border Czar Tom Homan appointed to lead in his stead.
Trump maintained that the move was strictly a deescalation and not a pullback from his hardline deportation agenda, which remains a cornerstone of his administration.
Another pressure for the government regarding the ICE operation came from the Congress since the Democrat Party threatened that they will not vote for the U.S. funding bill until the administration implements immigration agency reforms.

On Tuesday, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer asserted that Trump’s deescalation measures are insufficient to prevent a government shutdown; in fact, he argued they increase the likelihood of one.
Speaking on the Senate floor, Schumer stated, “The solution must come from Congress. The public cannot trust the administration to do the right thing on its own.”
Schumer declared he would withhold support for any spending bill allocating funds to ICE until rigorous oversight and institutional reforms are implemented. He emphasized that Senate Democrats remain unified in this stance.
He concluded by warning that if the Majority Leader brings the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spending bill to a vote knowing it will fail, they would be effectively guaranteeing another partial government shutdown this Friday.
