Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Thai government is closely monitoring Myanmar’s post-election landscape, with hopes of seeing a tangible move toward national reconciliation and peace. Given the shared border, Mr. Sihasak emphasized that Thailand must maintain a proactive role to safeguard national interests and facilitate regional stability.

The committee discussed the possibility of enhancing engagement with the Myanmar military government and all relevant stakeholders through a calibrated, step-by-step approach. Thailand aims to communicate progress to ASEAN, seeking to gradually restore relations and regional integration with Myanmar.

Regarding border management, Mr. Sihasak highlighted a multi-dimensional strategy to address ongoing conflicts and the surge in transnational crimes, specifically targeting call center scam syndicates and drug trafficking. The plan also covers cross-border environmental issues, such as river pollution, which has hindered border trade. To ensure a lasting peace, Thailand intends to engage in dialogue with both the Myanmar authorities and ethnic armed groups, while establishing a dedicated task force to lead these strategic initiatives.
