(SAP News - Ratcha Piyathammadhaj) Washington, D.C. - U.S. President Donald Trump has called on the European Union (EU) to consider imposing tariffs of up to 100% on goods from China and India, aiming to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine. The proposal was raised during a meeting between U.S. and EU officials on September 9 to explore options for increasing economic pressure on Russia.

News sources indicate that the tax measures target China and India, both major oil purchasers from Russia. The large-scale oil purchases are considered to support Russia’s economy and war efforts. Previously, the U.S. imposed a 50% on goods from India, including a 25% penalty for conducting transactions with Russia. If the EU proceeds with Trump’s demand, it will increase economic pressure on Russia significantly.

Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine has intensified. Russian forces launched heavy attacks on Kyiv over the weekend, hitting key government buildings with missiles and deploying hundreds of drones. In the Donbas region, more than 20 civilians were killed by Russian loitering munitions while queuing for pensions.

Trump expressed “dissatisfaction” with the situation and warned of stronger sanctions on the Kremlin. He plans to speak with Putin by phone later this week or early next week.
