International news agencies have reported an incident involving the Cuban Border Guard, who opened fire on passengers aboard a Florida-registered speedboat, resulting in four fatalities and six injuries.

The Cuban Ministry of the Interior issued a statement regarding the clash, asserting that border guards intercepted the vessel after it intruded into Cuban territorial waters. According to the ministry, as officials moved to inspect the boat, an armed individual on board opened fire, wounding a Cuban officer. This prompted the border guard forces to return fire.

The Ministry further stated that all passengers on the speedboat were Cuban nationals residing in the United States. A significant cache of firearms was reportedly discovered on the vessel. Based on preliminary testimony from the six survivors, authorities have characterized the event as a suspected infiltration operation aimed at committing acts of terrorism within Cuba.

Additionally, the Ministry reported that two of the survivors were individuals already wanted by Cuban authorities on terrorism charges. Another suspect, allegedly sent from the United States to assist the group, has been apprehended and has reportedly confessed to his involvement.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following initial reports, stated that the U.S. Embassy in Havana is currently verifying the facts provided by Cuban authorities. He noted that the United States would determine an appropriate response once the full details of the incident are confirmed.

The incident occurs amid heightened tensions between the United States and Cuba, driven by U.S. efforts to block nearly all oil shipments to the island. This blockade has left Cuba facing a severe fuel crisis and a significant economic downturn.
