Today (20 October 2026) at 10:00 AM at Government House, Mr. Yotchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), provided an update on the relocation of the Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok, Uthenthawai Campus, to a new site. He stated that he has held discussions with administrators from both Uthenthawai and Pathumwan Institute of Technology, following concerns raised by both institutions regarding the impact on teaching and learning during the 90-day period in which classes will be conducted online. He has engaged with students who visited the Ministry, as well as the presidents of both institutions with ongoing consultations specifically involving Uthenthawai. The immediate focus is to identify methods to minimize the impact on students, including securing alternative learning spaces, facilitating online instruction, and coordinating access to laboratory facilities to ensure that practical coursework can continue as appropriate.

Mr. Yotchanan further noted that regarding support for affected students particularly those unable to relocate or those facing additional housing costs he has instructed the President of Uthenthawai to review the details to find ways to assist with previously paid dormitory expenses and to consider appropriate tuition fee reductions. Students who wish to transfer to other institutions will receive full support, as will affected faculty members; the university will consult with relevant parties to find solutions regarding housing and employment. As for the new campus, a clear implementation plan is already in place, with some steps already underway. However, the transition period will take time, and efforts are being made to ensure everything is finalized within the 90-day timeframe.

When asked whether the relocation of Uthenthawai a process that has faced numerous obstacles in the past will finally succeed, Mr. Yotchanan credited those who laid the initial groundwork and strategy. He noted that he is continuing this work to provide greater clarity, specifically regarding the readiness of the new site and the potential impact on students. He is scheduled to meet with Uthenthawai’s administration again on the afternoon of October 22 to discuss progress and address the concerns of all involved. He acknowledged that his primary concern is the quality of education, which requires cooperation from all sides from securing facilities and teaching equipment to developing appropriate measures to mitigate any negative impacts.

Regarding whether the plan will be completed within the 90-day deadline, Mr. Yotchanan stated that the operational plan is already finished, though the transition phase will require building a shared understanding. He emphasized that he will maintain ongoing dialogue with the administration to resolve concerns, including those related to previous instances of opposition and intimidation directed at the institution's leadership.

In response to reports of opposition from alumni who object to the relocation from the current site, Mr. Yotchanan explained that discussions have been held with Chulalongkorn University, confirming that the land will not be used for commercial purposes. Furthermore, a joint committee has been established to oversee the management of the area. To establish a framework for utilization in education, innovation, and industry, the institution has engaged the Council of Engineers to provide support regarding educational quality. It is emphasized that all laboratories and equipment must meet established standards. Furthermore, the institution is open to receiving feedback from alumni, current students, and faculty members, while also exploring options for students who wish to pursue their studies in their home provinces all with the goal of ensuring that this transition causes minimal disruption to all parties involved.
