Today (2 November 2026), Captain Patdarasam Thongsaluaykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced that the government is proactively addressing housing hardships faced by vulnerable groups and low-income individuals nationwide. Most recently, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) visited Udon Thani province to advance the “Udon Thani Model,” envisioned as a hub for quality living, well-being, and sustainability in the Mekong River Basin, which serves as a community-centered framework for problem-solving.
Captain Patdarasam further noted that, as part of ongoing efforts to resolve housing issues for vulnerable and low-income populations, the government has allocated a budget of 9,075,000 baht for the 2026 fiscal year. Distributed through the Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI), these funds support the repair and renovation of homes for low-income residents in Udon Thani province under the “Sufficient Housing Project.” To date, repairs and construction have been completed for 301 households. Additionally, the initiative has provided concrete solutions for those affected by the development of the railway system. A land lease agreement from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) was granted to the “Ban Mankong Rim Rang Rotfai” (Secure Housing Along the Railway) Cooperative. Additionally, keys and new household registration documents were presented to 37 families in the Thung Sawang Tawan Ok community, Mueang Udon Thani District. This transition shifts their status from “encroachers” to legal tenants, providing them with safe housing and immediate access to essential public utilities.

Captain Patdarasam added that the “Sufficient Housing Project” (Baan Por Piang) serves as a key government mechanism to reduce social inequality. It assists households living in dilapidated homes, those with unstable materials or a need for reconstruction, but lacking the necessary income to secure better and safer living conditions. The operational model places the community at the core; residents conduct on-site surveys to identify those in genuine need at the sub-district level, followed by a collective community resolution. The government then provides funding for construction materials to repair damaged homes, fix leaking roofs, or reinforce unsafe structures, with the actual work carried out through the combined efforts of volunteers, local craftspeople, and local administrative organizations.
Captain Patdarasam further noted that the “Udon Thani Model” reflects a proactive government approach, one that goes beyond merely building houses to fostering better lives and long-term security for the people. The government intends to replicate this collaborative framework involving the state, local authorities, and community networks across other provinces nationwide to ensure that all vulnerable groups have access to safe and sustainable housing.
