Today (3 November 2026) at 8:20 AM at the Monthathip Hall International Convention Center in Mak Khaeng Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District, Udon Thani Province, Mr. Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Industry, addressed concerns among Prachin Buri residents regarding water pollution originating from local industrial plants. He noted that on October 31, 2026, the Department of Industrial Works collected additional samples, including soil samples, to determine whether the levels of various contaminants had increased or decreased over time. It is anticipated that some residues remain, particularly as water levels continue to drop and chemical concentrations in waterways or rice paddies increase. He emphasized that he has demanded the company provide full financial compensation to all affected residents.

Mr. Varawut stated that community leaders have requested government agencies to act as mediators in negotiations between the public and operators. In response, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has directed relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Interior, to coordinate their efforts. The provincial governor has tasked the district chief with mediating discussions regarding compensation, while the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment are assessing the extent of damage. Test results for water and soil quality in the affected area are expected within 2–3 days (out of a one-week processing timeframe). He reiterated that he has accelerated comprehensive relief efforts for the public.

Regarding concerns that Thailand’s acceptance of $375,900 in funding from China for the development of the recycling industry might create a loophole for the illegal importation of hazardous waste, Mr. Varawut clarified that documented, official shipments are not the primary risk, as they have clear origins and destinations. The real danger lies in undocumented shipments—attempts to smuggle waste through natural border crossings, conceal it within shipping containers, or make false declarations. This presents a complex challenge, given that tens of thousands of shipping containers enter Thailand daily. Consequently, regarding the measure approved by the Cabinet last week, the public can rest assured that it will not lead to the illegal dumping of industrial waste, as the matter concerns direct government-to-government communication aimed at ensuring proper disposal methods.
