On October 14, 2025, at 1 p.m., the Thai Elephant Repatriation Group, led by Ms. Yuwanuch Kiatwong, submitted a petition to the Parliamentary Committee on Sustainable Wild Elephant Management at the Parliament’s press room. The group urged the government to take action in bringing Thai elephants living in Sri Lanka back home safely. The petition was received by Mr. Salit Butnain, Deputy Chair of the Committee, and Mr. Nitipon Piwmow, an MP from the People’s Party.

The group’s action follows concerns stemming from past decisions by the Thai governments of Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda in 1980 and Mr. Chuan Leekpai in 2001, which sent Thai elephants to Sri Lanka as diplomatic gifts. However, no agreements were made to ensure their welfare, leading to reports and images in international media showing Thai elephants being mistreated. Some were allegedly used in parades with illuminated decorations on their bodies, for logging, commercial advertisements, films, and even as attractions for donations, activities considered exploitative and inhumane.

According to the group, at least two elephants, Phlai Pratoopha and Phlai Srinrong, are currently in Sri Lanka. Both are elderly and reportedly in poor condition. The group called on the Thai government to urgently repatriate the elephants so they can live under proper welfare and care standards.

Mr. Sarit Butnain said the committee will bring the matter forward for review and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure the elephants’ safe return.

Mr. Nitipon Piwmow added that, as a Member of Parliament, he will push for a swift and secure repatriation of both elephants to their homeland.
