On 27 November 2025, violence in Hat Yai’s Zone 8 intensified for the second consecutive day as multiple rescue teams were fired upon while attempting to assist flood victims. The escalating tension stems from severe stress, hunger, and fear among residents who have been without food and water for days. Some also mistakenly believed rescue teams refused to help or were merely entering the area to take photos, forcing several units to withdraw for safety.
The situation worsened after activist Gun Jompalang reported that local residents complained about “an armed man threatening people and repeatedly cocking his gun” in Zone 8. The presence of armed individuals heightened fear across the flood-stricken neighborhood, where many residents were still awaiting evacuation.
Multiple violent incidents directly targeted rescue personnel. A jet ski was shot at twice, a flat-bottom boat team was assaulted, and Ton Prakan from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation reported hearing two gunshots and seeing smoke coming from a building on the second or third floor while delivering supplies in the area.

One of the most alarming incidents involved a rescue volunteer known as Ohm Dynamo, who was shot at while riding a jet ski to survey flooded neighborhoods. Gunshots were clearly heard in a video he recorded, forcing him to jump into the water to escape. He said he “came to help but ended up being shot at.”

Violence also erupted in nearby areas. At 8.30 p.m. on 26 November, the San Kamphaeng rescue team from Chiang Mai was fired upon more than 20 times while trying to deliver aid to bedridden patients, infants, and stranded animals in Khlong Ror 1 Municipality, adjacent to Hat Yai. Earlier that evening, the team heard two magazines’ worth of gunfire. They sent drones to broadcast messages urging residents to stop shooting, but more gunshots followed later that night, prompting the team leader to withdraw immediately, citing unsafe conditions for delivering essential supplies.
Despite being shot at and verbally abused by some individuals, the San Kamphaeng team announced that they returned to the area at 1.00 a.m. to continue helping those still waiting for rescue, apologizing for the earlier temporary withdrawal.
Due to escalating dangers, several volunteer units temporarily pulled out of Zone 8, including the team led by “Rong Iad Nongthong” from Phuket. Teams still operating in the area expressed concerns that ongoing gunfire has scared residents, making them afraid to request help or receive aid deliveries.
Many sources suggest various factors have fueled the surge in tension, including residents going without food or water for more than 4-5 days, the loss of essential medication, particularly psychiatric medication, and misunderstandings that rescue teams were refusing to help or were not providing assistance fairly. These conditions led some individuals to express anger and resort to violence.
